UT DENTAL SCHOOL IS ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS

Becoming a patient at The University of Texas School of Dentistry (UTSD) at Houston provides affordable dental care to the Houston Community. The school, located at 6516 M.D. Anderson Blvd. in the Texas Medical Center, has three types of clinics – student clinics, graduate clinics and the faculty practice, UT Dentists. In the student clinics the care is delivered by third- or fourth year dental students (or senior dental hygiene students) under supervision of licensed faculty dentists and dental hygienists. Payment is by cash, credit card or money order only – no personal checks – but the fees are the lowest available, typically priced about 50-70 % lower than a private dentist would charge. Adults and children age 13 and over: Call 713-500-4000, Option 2, or use the online registration tool: https://secureweb.hsc.uth.tmc.edu/appointmentform/public/. For children ages 5-12: Call 713-500-4334. For children under age 5: Call 713-500-8220.

Urban Indian Health Town Hall Meeting
June 21, 2011 6PM
United Way, 50 Waugh Drive, Houston TX 77007

Houston has been tapped as a viable location for an Urban American Indian Clinic by the Indian Health Service

The Affordable Care Act included authorization for the Indian Health Service to conduct a national needs assessment to identify urban cities in need of an Indian Health Service Clinic and Houston is one of the top contenders. On June 21, representatives from Kauffman and Associates will present their findings from the national research regarding the health care needs of Urban American Indians/Alaska Natives living in Houston and the surrounding areas.  The Native American Health Coalition in Houston, Texas, will also present local findings from our work within the community.

Please plan to attend or send a representative to this event to support the American Indian/Alaska Native community in Houston.  A new, federally funded health provider in the community would benefit us all. Native American people would have access to federally promised health care and an additional provider would help to reduce the strain on existing systems.

About American Indian/Alaska Natives in Houston

Approximately 60,000 Native Americans live in Harris and the seven surrounding counties.  This is the sixth largest population of Urban Indians in the United States, and one of the largest without a dedicated Indian Health Service ClinicTexas is home to three reservations:  the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe in Livingston, the Tiguas in El Paso, and the Kickapoo in Eagle Pass.  Many thousands more “urban Indians” come from various tribes and live in the larger cities around Texas.  The Urban Inter-tribal Center in Dallas is the closest Indian Health Service
